Does upgrading the rally point just increase movement speed of your units? Or is there more?

Rally point does not increase speed of units. Once you get a rally point to 15, you can build a tournament square and then increase the stamina of your units. So when you send them on an attack further than 30 squares away they will get there faster with each level of the tournament square.

If you do not get a tournament square, upgrading your rally point gives your catapult more targets to hit. At a level 3 rally point you can attack the warehouse and granary. Lvl 5 -Bakery, brickyard, clay pit, wheat field, flour mill, iron foundry, iron mine, saw mill, woodcutter. Lvl 10 - everything else. Lvl 20 - you get to attack two things at once.

also not to mention, upgrading your rally point to lvl 10 lets you pick your cata targets.
